Description

Since the days of ancient Rome, Tivoli has been a popular summer resort thanks to its location on the Monti Tiburtini, hills East of Rome, as well as to its healthy sulphur springs and the waterfalls of the Aniene River. The visit of the ruins of Emperor Hadrian’s Villa and of the Renaissance Villa d’Este are well worth the short trip from Rome.

HADRIAN’S VILLA — Winter and summer quarters, porticoes, pavilions, thermal baths, a theatre and a temple, outdoor and indoor dining rooms, a guests’ quarter: all of them set in a magnificent natural frame of gardens, ponds, valleys, avenues and connected by underground walkways.

VILLA D’ESTE — This Renaissance villa is renowned for its terraced gardens and spectacular fountains laid out in the 16th century for Cardinal Ippolito d’Este, but also for the fresco paintings on the ceilings and walls of the building.
